A brushfire consumed more than three acres of vegetation Saturday afternoon in the Ballona Creek Wetlands of Playa del Rey.

The fire was reported at 5:34 p.m. at 13600 W. Culver Blvd., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Brian Humphrey.

It was considered a major emergency fire that was being battled by 86 LAFD firefighters on the ground and air with help from Los Angeles County and Culver City firefighters.

The fire started at one-quarter acre and spread to 3 1/2 acres, but Humphrey later reported that firefighters were “making significant progress.”

No structures were threatened, he said.

The firefight required that one or more lanes of Culver and Jefferson boulevards west of Lincoln Boulevard be closed until operations were complete, he said.

Law enforcement in the area received calls from around the area from people who saw heavy black smoke.
