Local authorities Monday rescued two deer in danger of drowning in the Coachella Canal in Indio.

Indio police officers responded around 8 a.m. to the area near Avenue 42, west of Golf Center Parkway, on a report of two young deer in the Coachella Canal, according to the Indio Police Department.

Police said two exhausted-looking deer were traveling with the water current westbound. It appeared as though they had been in the canal for an extended period of time, according to police.

Officials from the Coachella Valley Water District, Indio Cal Fire and the Riverside County Animal Services worked with officers to rescue the deer near Jackson Street and Avenue 41, police said.

Animal Services officials took the deer, which police said appeared to be in good health.
