A 35-year-old man was convicted Tuesday of molesting a relative under the age of 14 between October 2018 and March 2019.

Scott Russell Dugan was arrested on May 30, 2019 and pleaded not guilty the next week to felony charges for engaging in sexual intercourse with a child under 10, oral copulation or sexual penetration of a child and a lewd and lascivious act with a child under 14.

On Aug. 2, 2019, Judge Edward Forstenzer held Dugan to answer on the third count but threw out the first two counts, ruling there was not enough evidence for him to stand trial for those charges.

Dugan was convicted Tuesday for the felony charge of a lewd and lascivious act with a child under 14. He’s set to appear at the Larson Justice Center in Indio for his sentencing on Aug. 23.

In a declaration in support of an arrest warrant filed in May 2019, Detective Steven Grissom of the Palm Springs Police Department said a woman reported to police that her daughter was being molested by a relative.

A forensic interviewer at the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center said the victim reported that Dugan had touched her inappropriately on several occasions at his home.

A criminal complaint filed the same day as Dugan’s arrest alleges the offenses took place between October 2018 and March 2019.

Dugan remains in custody at the John J. Benoit Detention Center on $1 million bail.
