At least 70 people were displaced Wednesday evening after a fire partially destroyed a Moreno Valley apartment complex.

Riverside County Fire Department firefighters were called just before 6:55 p.m. to the 13200 block of Heacock Street, near Moreno Valley Community Park, on what was initially reported as a fire in the attic of a two-story commercial building, according to a department statement.

Eleven fire engines and firefighters from the Murrieta, Corona and Colton fire departments were called to the scene to assist firefighting efforts, and authorities managed to douse the flames by about 9:10 p.m.

Authorities reported four units in the apartment building were destroyed by the flames, and five other units suffered smoke damage. The other apartments in the 24-unit complex suffered water damage and disconnected utilities due to the fire.

At least 40 adults and 30 children were displaced due to the damage caused by the fire, and the American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the residents.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
