A 38-year old parolee has been charged murdering a homeless man in Santa Ana, police said Wednesday.

Physical evidence linked Robert Rodriguez Jr. to the scene of the stabbing, according to the Santa Ana Police Department, and the Orange County District Attorney’s office filed a murder charge against Rodriguez on Monday.

During the course of their investigation, detectives learned Rodriguez was in custody at the Orange County Jail for an unrelated assault case and on active parole.

Santa Ana police received a call for assistance on Aug. 11 regarding with a possible assault victim along the bike trail in the 2600 block of North Broadway Avenue, police said.

Aaron William Parks, 28, suffered a stab wound to the head and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 7:19 p.m. Aug 16.

Detectives learned the assault possibly stemmed from a dispute between the two men and appears to be a result of an unprovoked attack, police said.
