A man who shot and killed a 23-year-old Jurupa Valley resident during an altercation at a Riverside apartment complex was sentenced Friday to 16 years in state prison.
Luis Angel Sanchez, 21, of Riverside pleaded guilty last month to voluntary manslaughter and a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a firearm in the commission of a felony for the 2021 slaying of Raul Hernandez Ramirez.
The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office dropped a murder charge as part of the plea bargain.
During a sentencing hearing at the Riverside Hall of Justice, Superior Court Judge Charles Koosed certified the terms of the plea deal and imposed the term of imprisonment stipulated by the prosecution and defense.
According to Riverside Police Department Officer Javier Cabrera, about 12:30 a.m. on July 10, 2021, Sanchez and Ramirez were behind the apartment complex in the 5400 block of Olivewood Avenue, near Bandini Avenue, when they got into an argument for unspecified reasons.
As the exchange escalated, Sanchez “produced a handgun and fatally shot the victim,” Cabrera said.
The defendant fled in an unknown direction as witnesses called 911 to report the gunfire, according to Cabrera.
Paramedics arrived minutes later and pronounced Ramirez dead at the scene, Cabrera said.
Homicide detectives developed leads within hours pointing to Sanchez as the gunman. He was taken into custody without incident that afternoon at a nearby residence.
The relationship between the defendant and victim, if any, was not disclosed, nor were any details regarding a possible motive.
Sanchez had no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
