A man who was hit by a car while running across a street in Long Beach died several hours later at a hospital, police said Friday.

The man was injured about 6:25 p.m. Thursday at Pacific Coast Highway and Channel Drive, near Bellflower Boulevard, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was running across Pacific Coast Highway, outside of a crosswalk, when he was struck by a 2021 Toyota Corolla that was being driven by a 20-year-old resident of Wilmington,” police said.

“The driver and several witnesses remained at the scene and were cooperating with the investigation,” police said. “The pedestrian was conscious and alert and was speaking to good Samaritans who were providing him aid.”

Paramedics took the man to a hospital in critical condition, and he died several hours later, police said. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

“At this time, speed, distracted driving, and impaired driving are not believed to be contributing factors in the collision,” police said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police at 562-570-7355, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
