A deputy from the Cabazon Sheriff’s Station shot and killed a knife-wielding parolee during an arrest attempt Saturday.
The shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. on Carmen Avenue west of Rafael Street in unincorporated Cabazon, Sgt. Brandi Swan told City News Service.
The deputy spotted a parolee with an arrest warrant for a parole violation who was riding a bicycle on the wrong side of the street and attempted a traffic stop, Swan said.
“The suspect was uncooperative with the deputy and attempted to flee the scene on his bicycle” Swan said. “The deputy tried to detain the suspect, but the suspect removed a large knife from his pocket and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”
The deputy rendered aid to the wounded suspect until paramedics from the Riverside County Fire Department arrived and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene, she said.
The knife was recovered at the scene, Swan said. The deputy was not injured but will be placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.
The suspect’s name was not released pending notification of relatives.
The shooting was under investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney’s Office, she said.
