A 7-year-old boy and 25-year-old woman were stabbed at a Target store in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday evening and the homeless man suspected of the stabbing was shot by a security guard, police said.

Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived at the store at the FIGat7th shopping center shortly after 6:20 p.m. to find two stabbing victims and a third victim who had been punched by the suspect while trying to intervene in the stabbing, Capt. Elaine Morales said.

The woman was stabbed in the chest and the boy was stabbed in a shoulder, Morales said.

The suspect — identified only as a homeless man — grabbed a knife off a shelf to commit the stabbings, Morales said. The suspect approached a security guard after wounding the woman and the boy, but was shot, according to Morales.

The suspect was taken into custody and was reported to be in stable condition, Morales said.

The victims’ status was not released, but at least one stabbing victim was in critical condition, Los Angeles Fire Department officials told the Los Angeles Times.
