An undressed man who threw rocks at Los Angeles Police Department officers and jumped on vehicles on the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway in Pacoima was taken into custody after officers used force to stop him, authorities said Monday.
Officers responded to a call just before 4 p.m. Sunday of a man walking in the middle of Laurel Canyon Boulevard, possibly under the influence of narcotics or suffering mental illness, LAPD Officer D. Orris told City News Service. The man was clad only in underwear.
When officers located the man, he began throwing rocks at them, striking their patrol cars, according to an LAPD press release.
The man then ran onto the Ronald Reagan Freeway and climbed onto vehicles in a possible attempt to carjack them, police said. The officers contacted the CHP which stopped oncoming traffic.
The first vehicle upon which the suspect climbed sped away and he fell onto the pavement, police said.
He climbed onto a second vehicle and tried to break its sun roof, Orris said.
That prompted the use of force by officers with less-lethal devices to take the man into custody, the press release said.
Paramedics took the man to a hospital due to injuries he suffered during the incident and his altered state and he was expected to be arrested upon release, police said. The officers suffered minor injuries while taking him into custody.
