A Downey police officer was taken to a hospital early Monday morning after a head-on collision between a patrol SUV and a civilian sedan.
The crash was at Lakewood Boulevard and Columbia Way, according to an advisory by the Downey Police Department on Facebook. It occurred around 1:45 a.m., according to a news videographer at the scene.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed on its log that the officer was taken to a hospital.
Video from the scene showed heavy front-end damage to both the police SUV and the white sedan with air bags deployed in both vehicles and Downey firefighters removing an injured man from the car.
In the 3:38 a.m. Facebook post, the DPD urged motorists to avoid the area, with northbound lanes of Lakewood Boulevard closed from Donovan to Alameda streets and northbound lanes of Columbia Way closed from Imperial Highway.
