A crane crashed into a pole in Malibu Wednesday, toppling over and killing its operator.

Firefighters responded near Las Flores Canyon Road at around 5:30 p.m. and were waiting for the power lines to be deactivated before approaching the crane, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Several firefighters attempted to contact the crane operator but he did not respond, KCAL reported, citing information from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Pacific Coast Highway was closed from Las Flores Canyon Road to Hume Road to allow for the rescue attempt, a department official said.

The crane operator’s name has not been released by authorities.

It’s unclear what caused the crash.
