A 31-year-old man was jailed without bail Friday following his arrest at the end of a pursuit during which he allegedly intentionally rammed several Los Angeles Police Department vehicles.

Nery Alvarado was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Thursday near Washington Boulevard and Budlong Avenue following a pursuit prompted by a report that he was attempting to steal catalytic converters, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police said officers responded around 6 p.m. and witnessed Alvarado attempting to steal a converter, but he jumped into a stolen vehicle and drove off. During the ensuing pursuit, Alvarado allegedly “deliberately rammed multiple police vehicles, occupied by officers, in an attempt to get away” in the area of Olympic and Harvard boulevards.

A short time later, the suspect crashed the car into a pole near Washington and Budlong, police said. He allegedly jumped out of the disabled vehicle and unsuccessfully tried to carjack another, after which he was arrested.

Alvarado was initially taken to a hospital to be examined and was later booked on suspicion of attempted carjacking.

No other injuries, including among officers, were reported.
