A fire erupted Friday just west of Riverside Municipal Airport, blackening roughly an acre and a half but not threatening any homes before crews stopped it.
The non-injury blaze was reported about 4 p.m. in the area of Doolittle and Jurupa avenues, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
The agency said that multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames burning in light vegetation toward Hole Lake.
Firefighters were able to hold the fire within open space near a golf course, and its forward rate of spread was stopped at 4:25 p.m., according to reports from the scene.
Full containment was expected by 5 p.m.
It was not immediately clear what might have triggered the blaze, though the area, which is less than a half-mile south of the Santa Ana River bottom, is known to draw transients.
