A fire erupted Tuesday in a Winchester residence, spreading into surrounding vegetation and causing propane tanks to explode before it was stopped.

The non-injury blaze was reported about 4:40 p.m. in the 33100 block of Ninth Street, just off of Highway 79, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said that multiple engine crews from the county and Hemet Fire Department were sent to the location and encountered flames raging in the single-story house, extending into an adjacent field.

Witnesses reported several explosions, which officials attributed to propane tanks burning on the property.

California Highway Patrol officers were summoned to shut down access to Ninth Street from the highway for public safety.

As of 5:20 p.m., the blaze was almost fully contained, according to reports from the scene.

There was no immediate word on what might have caused the fire, and it was unclear whether anyone was displaced.
