Firefighters waged a tough, defensive battle Sunday morning to put out a greater alarm fire inside one unit of a downtown strip commercial site.
The fire was reported at 4:15 a.m. at 840 E. Fourth Street, said the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Nicholas Prang.
Heavy flames were showing when firefighters arrived so they took a defensive stance, cutting strips into the roof to limit horizontal spread and training water on the blaze from outside the structure, Prang said.
“Firefighters set up heavy streams, including 2.5-inch hand lines, portable monitors, and wagon batteries (deck guns),” he said.” Ultimately, 98 firefighters skillfully contained the intense fire to only the unit of origin and extinguished the flames in 47 minutes.”
Adjacent buildings were not damaged and no injuries were reported, he said.
