Fire burned through the roof of a vacant commercial building in South Los Angeles Thursday, threatening nearby structures.

According to spokesman Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department, firefighters responded to the 7100 block of Avalon Boulevard near Florence Avenue around 5:40 p.m.

Thick white smoke could be seen pouring from the roof of the structure, which was described by fire officials as a single-story metal-clad commercial building. Two nearby structures were threatened by the flames, and crews worked to contain the fire to the original building.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
