Imperial Highway was shut down Monday morning in South Gate after a woman crashed a vehicle into a fire hydrant and utility pole causing a deadly mix of water and downed power lines.
The crash occurred about 12:55 a.m. on Imperial Highway between Garfield Avenue and Wright Road, according to South Gate police Lt. R. Amador.
South Gate officers immediately shut down Imperial Highway in the area and the California Highway Patrol shut down the eastbound Imperial Highway off-ramp from the Long Beach (710) Freeway, Amador said.
The woman driving the vehicle was not injured and was the only person inside, he said.
Officers arrested her for suspicion of DUI, Amador said.
Edison workers cut power to the downed lines and were busy replacing the pole and repairing the wires, he said.
