One person has died and another was in critical condition Thursday evening after they were stabbed in downtown Los Angeles and a possible suspect was detained.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded around 3:45 p.m. to the area of West Sixth Street between Broadway and South Spring Street on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon on at least two people.

KTLA5 reported from the scene that one victim was a man in his 60s, who was discovered with stab wounds to his stomach outside a Starbucks.

LAPD Officer Melissa Ohani confirmed to City News Service that one victim had been pronounced dead and the second victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Traffic was shut down in both directions of Spring Street in the vicinity of the stabbing as police continued investigating the crime scene.

There was no immediate information available about the person who was detained.
