A man who brandished a handgun at Riverside County Sheriff’s Department deputies was shot and killed in San Jacinto Tuesday, authorities said.

Deputies were sent to the 1400 block of South San Jacinto Avenue, near Esplande Avenue, shortly after 3:20 p.m. Tuesday to a report regarding an armed suspect, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez.

The suspect was riding a bicycle northbound on San Jacinto Avenue before deputies approached him. Deputies then instructed him to get off his bike, Brito-Gonzales said.

As the suspect got off the bike, he produced a handgun, resulting in a deputy-related shooting, according to Brito-Gonzales.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and immediately rendered aid until the arrival of paramedics, Brito-Gonzalez said

The suspect was later pronounced dead at the scene.

No deputies were injured during the shooting, and the deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave according to department policy, Brito-Gonzalez said.

“An investigator from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office who is assigned to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Force Investigation Detail will lead this investigation,” the sheriff’s department said.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting was urged to call Riverside County District Attorney’s Investigator J.R. Ferrer or Riverside County Sheriff’s Investigator Daniel Moody at 951-955-2777.
