A male pedestrian was fatally injured when he was struck by a sedan while crossing a street in Riverside and the motorist who left the scene was located and arrested, authorities said Monday.

The crash was reported at 4:08 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of University Avenue and Main Street, according to Riverside police Sgt. James Elliott.

A silver Honda Civic allegedly driven by Jesus Rodriguez was eastbound on University when it hit the pedestrian in the crosswalk, Elliott said.

Paramedics took the pedestrian to Riverside Community Hospital where he died from his injuries, the sergeant said. His name was not released pending notification of relatives. His age was not released.

“The suspect was later located by Riverside sheriff’s deputies in San Jacinto,” Elliott said. “The driver, identified as Jesus Rodriguez, was found to be intoxicated.”

Rodriguez was arrested for suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony hit and run, the sergeant said.

Anyone with information about the crash was urged to call Det. Ryan McHugh at 951-826-8720.
