Firefighters found two bodies Sunday after extinguishing a fire that encompassed a primary home and two back houses in Sylmar, where they reported heavy ammunition being “cooked off.”
One of the victims was a woman, while the gender and age of the other victim were not immediately clear, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.
Crews dispatched at 5:36 a.m. to 13755 N. Glenoaks Blvd. and had the greater alarm blaze out at 5:59 a.m., according to the fire department.
Authorities said weapons were also found at the site. A bomb squad was called to the location, as well as an arson detail.
The three residences were “red-tagged” by Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.
“While remaining in a defensive position due to heavy ammunition going off, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in all three structures,” the LAFD’s Margaret Stewart said. “Crews will work to address hot spots without entering the structure.”
The cause of the fire was being investigated. The department added that crews would be working throughout the day alongside fire cause investigators and the Medical Examiner’s Office.
