A recent gun buyback event in Burbank yielded 72 weapons, authorities said Saturday.

Six shotguns, 39 handguns, 23 rifles and four assault weapons were collected during the anonymous buyback event held Dec. 9 in the rear parking lot of the Burbank Police/Fire Department Headquarters at 200 N. Third St., according to Sgt. Stephen Turner.

Participants received a $100 pre-paid gift card to Walmart for each handgun, rifle or shotgun and a $200 gift card for each assault weapon, as classified by the state of California, Turner said.

“All weapons collected were verified to determine if they have been reported as lost or stolen, and if applicable, will be returned to their legal owners,” he said. “All other firearms will be destroyed in compliance with California state law.”
