A murder suspect who was found inside a Home Gardens residence where the deadly attack occurred was shot by deputies, suffering non-life-threatening wounds, authorities said Friday.

The deputy-involved shooting happened about 2:30 a.m. Thursday in the 13400 block of Barker Lane, near Indiana Avenue, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Wenndy Brito Gonzalez said that patrol deputies were sent to the location to investigate reports of gunshots “and discovered a man lying on the ground outside his residence.”

The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene from a wound to the upper body.

Deputies ascertained that the alleged perpetrator was holed up within the house, and the sheriff’s SWAT unit was summoned to enter the property and conduct a search, according to Gonzalez.

“While searching the residence, deputies encountered the murder suspect, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” she said.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

The alleged shooter, whose identity was also withheld, was taken to a regional trauma center for treatment of minor wounds.

The deputies who utilized their weapons during the confrontation — none of whom were identified — were placed on paid administrative leave, according to Gonzalez.

The sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail, in cooperation with the District Attorney’s Office, is handling the probe into the deputy-involved shooting.

A possible motive for the fatal attack the preceded the confrontation with SWAT members was not provided.
