Four people were arrested during a DUI checkpoint in Rancho Mirage, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced Saturday.

The checkpoint was conducted at Highway 111 and Library Way from 6 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday.

A total of 1,318 vehicles were contacted, and one person was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, one person was arrested for an outstanding warrant and two other were arrested for driving with a suspended license, the sheriff’s department announced.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes.

“The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads,” the sheriff’s department said.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
