A 41-year-old man suspected of being in possession of two firearms and ammunition was released from jail Wednesday on a $10,000 bail bond.

Leroy Melgoza of Desert Hot Springs was arrested Tuesday afternoon and booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio, but he was released by Wednesday, according to inmate records.

Members with the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force received information in December last year about a prior convicted felon in possession of several firearms, according to Sgt. Cameron James of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Melgoza was subsequently identified as the suspect.

He was found and arrested at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Monterey Avenue and Dinah Shore Drive in Rancho Mirage, James said. A search warrant was then served at the suspect’s residence in the 15500 block of Bubbling Wells Road, where two firearms and ammunition were found, according to James.

Anyone with additional information about the firearm possession was asked to call Gang Task Force member Deputy Chavez at 760-836-1600.
