Two people were killed Friday when their vehicle careened off the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway and crashed into a tree near the unincorporated Athens area.

California Highway Patrol officers responded at 2:26 a.m. to the eastbound freeway and Normandie Avenue where they found the victims, CHP Officer Sergio Garcia told City News Service.

The victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner identified one of them as 20-year-old Jonathan Pena Langarcia.

According to Fox11, witnesses said a white sedan had been racing with the victims before the crash and drove away down the 105 Freeway without stopping.

Witnesses said the vehicle that crashed split in two when it slammed into the tree.
