Power was restored Monday to businesses affected by a power outage caused by a motorist, who was suspected of driving under the influence, crashing into two power poles on Highway 111.

Officers responded at 7:40 a.m. Sunday to a report that a vehicle struck a power pole on Highway 111, just west of Clinton Street, Indio Police Department spokesman Ben Guitron told City News Service. Upon arrival, officers found that the vehicle struck two Imperial Irrigation District power poles and two fire hydrants.

“When the vehicle came to rest, the driver was there, and the driver didn’t have any injuries, but they discovered signs of the driver being under the influence,” Guitron said. “He was detained without incident and eventually arrested for DUI.”

According to inmate records, 37-year-old Camilo Guzman Contreras was arrested and booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio Sunday morning, but was released the same day on a $3,500 bail bond.

The crash caused a power outage to businesses along Highway 111, prompting the Imperial Irrigation District to repair the power lines, according to Guitron.

The utility finished service repairs by Monday morning and power was restored.
