A 36-year-old man who Los Angeles Police Department officers fatally shot in downtown Los Angeles was identified Tuesday.

He was identified as Jason Maccani, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s office.

The shooting occurred at 2:14 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Towne Avenue, west of South Central Avenue near Skid Row, according to LAPD Officer Drake Madison.

The officers were responding to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon suspect, Madison said.

Police alleged the possibly intoxicated man was armed with a stick and was threatening employees of a manufacturing business.

Arriving officers encountered Maccani and deployed less-than-lethal munitions prior to shooting him, police said.

Paramedics took Maccani to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.

An officer suffered a small laceration to his hand and was treated at the scene, officials said. It was not immediately clear how he was injured.

There was an investigation at the scene.
