A 63-year-old man was struck and killed while attempting to cross Highway 74 in Winchester, authorities said Wednesday.
Richie Thomas of Hemet was fatally injured at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday on the eastbound 74, between Truelson Avenue and Winchester Road, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The circumstances behind the fatality were not provided.
The driver stopped and was not arrested by California Highway Patrol officers, who ultimately took over the investigation.
According to the Riverside County Fire Department, paramedics reached the location 10 minutes later and pronounced Thomas dead at the scene.
The highway remained open.
