A 27-year-old man who walked onto railroad tracks in Corona was killed by a freight train, authorities said Thursday.

Luis Rey of Riverside was fatally injured at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday on Burlington Santa Fe Railroad tracks in the 300 block of North Sheridan Street, just north of Railroad Street, according to the Corona Police Department.

The agency said that Rey stepped onto the tracks for unknown reasons, and the freight train operator was unable to stop in time after spotting him, resulting in the victim being struck.

Patrol officers reached the location a few minutes later and found the victim dead and the train stopped, authorities said.

Riverside County coroner’s investigators took possession of the remains for further examination. The tracks were reopened within a couple of hours.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the police department at 951-736-2330.
