An autopsy was pending Wednesday on a 44-year-old man who stepped into traffic on a Murrieta street and was struck by three vehicles.

Leny Palma Gaitan of Murrieta was fatally injured at 7:29 p.m. Monday on Whitewood Road, between Somers and Baxter roads, according to the Murrieta Police Department.

The agency said Gaitan walked into southbound lanes where there was no pedestrian crossing and was soon hit by a vehicle traveling at an undetermined speed on the dark corridor, where rain was falling at the time.

“Two additional vehicles traveling south also struck the pedestrian,” the police department said in a statement.

All of the motorists immediately stopped and pulled over to wait for first responders.

Gaitan was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Statements were given by all three drivers, and no evidence of excessive speed or driver impairment was found,” police said. “Investigators are in the process of determining if the deceased was impaired at the time of the collision.”

Anyone with information about the death was asked to contact the police department at 951-200-9368.
