What was described as a “small kitchen explosion” in a San Juan Capistrano apartment Saturday led to the evacuation of surrounding units while a hazardous materials team inspected the area.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department put out the word at 2 p.m. that deputies and Orange County Fire Authority firefighters were working in the area of Ortega (74) Highway and Rancho Verde Road.

Deputies received a call of a small explosion in an apartment complex with no fire or injuries, OCSD Sgt. Frank Gonzalez told City News Service.

The explosion came from the kitchen of one apartment and deputies evacuated surrounding units while a hazardous materials team evaluated the site and determined it was safe, Gonzalez said. That took about two hours.

An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the explosion, he said.
