A man was in custody Tuesday for allegedly killing another man in Long Beach, police said.

The shooting occurred at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday in the 1600 block of Gaviota Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department. Nelson Martinez Gonzalez, 30, of Long Beach died at a hospital, police said.

“While clearing the scene, officers observed a possible suspect vehicle in the area,” police said in a statement. “Officers attempted a felony traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle failed to pull over leading to a department-authorized vehicle pursuit. The possible suspect stopped his vehicle near the 1700 block of Pacific Coast Highway and fled the scene on foot.

“Officers established a perimeter around the area and activated the SWAT Team,” police said. “SWAT officers located and arrested the male suspect for an unrelated no-bail arrest warrant and transported him to the Long Beach City Jail for booking.”

Detectives continued their investigation, and the suspect — Ahmed Mahmoud, 41, of Long Beach — was eventually booked on suspicion of murder and various other crimes, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was being held on $3.1 million bail, police said.

Detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Detectives Sean Magee or Juan Carlos Reyes at 562-570-7244. Tipsters may also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS, or use the website www.lacrimestoppers.org.
