The California Highway Patrol Friday is investigating a fatal crash involving a vehicle and a golf cart in a private country club community in Palm Desert.

The deceased man was identified as 80-year-old Sam Karagavoorian of Palm Desert, according to a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department press release that stated the collision occurred around 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the four-way intersection of Bonanza Drive and Mojave Sage Street.

“When officers arrived at the scene, it was reported as major injuries,” CHP officer David Torres told City News Service. “It wasn’t until later it was found to be a fatality.”

By the time officers arrived at the intersection in the private country club community, Karagavoorian had already been transported to Desert Regional Medical Center, according to Torres.

The vehicle driver stayed at the intersection and cooperated with authorities, Torres said, adding that early investigative results did not indicate drugs or alcohol were involved.

Karagavoorian was pronounced dead at 3:13 p.m. at the Rancho Mirage hospital.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Indio CHP office at 760-772-5300.
