Five juveniles were arrested Thursday in a Hawthorne neighborhood after allegedly stealing a Kia in Los Angeles and leading authorities on a wild pursuit.
The vehicle was allegedly stolen in South Los Angeles, and deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s South LA station began tracking it near midday Thursday.
The Kia headed north on the Harbor (110) Freeway through Carson at speeds nearing 100 mph before transitioning onto the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway through Torrance. Despite the relatively wide-open freeways due to the July 4 holiday, the driver sometimes used the shoulder of the road to try and elude authorities, KTLA5 reported.
Just before 1 p.m. the vehicle pulled off the freeway on W. 129th Street and Jefferson Avenue and five people quickly hopped out and scattered into the neighborhood, the station reported.
The sheriff’s department and Hawthorne police began a search, with the suspects believed to have entered residences at around 1:10 p.m., KTLA reported.
They were later taken into custody by deputies. The possible charges facing the quintet were not immediately released.
