Police sought the public’s assistance Monday in locating a hit-and-run motorist who severely injured a 72-year-old woman in the Van Ness area of South Los Angeles.

The crash occurred around 7:40 p.m. Jan. 22 near the intersection of Eighth Avenue and 60th Street as the woman was walking inside a marked crosswalk, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

According to police, a late-model burgundy SUV was being driven south on Eighth Avenue and struck the woman, and the driver fled the scene.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took the woman to a hospital with severe injuries, police said.

“Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves,” police said in a statement.

The city has a standing award of up to $25,000 for information leading to the identity, arrest, and conviction of a suspect in an injury hit-and-run.
