A man was found dead inside an Irvine home overnight, and police later fatally shot a suspect nearby, authorities said Monday.
Police received a 911 “medical aid call” about 2:15 a.m. to Whistling Swan near Wetstone, where the victim was found, said Irvine Police Department spokesman Kyle Oldoerp. The victim succumbed to his injuries, he added.
A minivan had crashed into the garage of the home as well, but that does not appear to have been connected to the killing, Oldoerp said. The crash caused a minor gas leak, which first responders managed to quickly handle, Oldoerp said.
The injuries to the victim were not related to the victim’s death, Oldoerp said. Family members have told reporters the victim was paralyzed and that they believe the suspect was a former caregiver.
About 3:25 a.m., police encountered a suspect in the killing on foot at West Yale Loop and Springbrook South, and he was shot, Oldoerp said. A knife was recovered at the scene, he added.
The suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but he later succumbed to his injuries, Oldoerp said.
Investigators were sorting through witness statements and other evidence to determine what relationship, if any, the suspect had with the victim, Oldoerp said.
