A Cathedral City motorist who died after striking a tree in Rancho Mirage was publicly identified Friday.

The solo vehicle crash happened at 6:10 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Highway 111 and Paxton Drive, according to a statement from the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station.

The driver was identified as 22-year-old Charlie Garcia Rodriguez, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

He was traveling northbound on Highway 111 when the collision occurred, authorities said.

Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene by Riverside County Fire Paramedics. It was unclear if there were any passengers.
