Murrieta residents who want a better understanding of police operations and how they can contribute to the safety of their community are invited to attend the Murrieta Police Department’s “Citizens’ Police Academy,” which gets underway next week.

“Only a few spots are left open,” according to an agency statement on Friday. “The academy is designed to increase understanding of the police department’s operations, conducted over twelve weeks.”

Classes for the 18th Citizens’ Police Academy will start on Aug. 28 and conclude in early December.

Most classes will be held in the police department’s headquarters, located next to City Hall at Two Town Square.

“Attendees will learn from our department’s personnel, who are experts in patrol tactics, criminal investigations, SWAT, K-9, narcotics, Neighborhood Watch, emergency communications, traffic enforcement, use-of-force and related fields,” the agency stated. “All attendees will participate in practical demonstrations, simulators and a ride-along during the academy.”

Applications for admission to the academy are being accepted until Tuesday. Officials said that applicants must be city residents, or at least work within the city, and be at least 21 years old, as well as not have any prior felony convictions. Everyone will be required to undergo a background check prior to acceptance.

“The academy is set up to encourage students to ask questions and express their concerns about pertinent issues,” according to the police department. “The major goal of the Citizens’ Police Academy is to increase understanding between our citizens and the Murrieta Police Department and to enhance and foster a strong relationship with our community.”
