A man pushing a shopping cart on state Route 74 in Lake Elsinore was struck and killed by a car driven by a suspected intoxicated driver who was arrested after attempting to flee, authorities announced Friday.
Officers were sent to state Route 74, west of Ardenwood Way, around 9:27 p.m. Thursday regarding a collision involving a pedestrian and 2018 Nissan Versa, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of the Nissan was briefly traveling behind the pedestrian before making an unsafe right turn and hitting the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the CHP, the motorist fled to a residence in Lake Elsinore and was later arrested and booked into the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, felony hit-and-run, and gross vehicular manslaughter.
