Several people were safely evacuated from a fire at a two-story apartment building in Van Nuys Sunday morning, but two — including a child — were taken to a hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The fire was reported at 12:36 a.m. at 7320 N. Hazeltine Ave. with smoke throughout both residential floors and a fire in one unit, LAFD spokesman Nicholas Prange said.
It took 43 firefighters 34 minutes to put out the flames.
“Initially, several people were trapped inside,” Prange said. “Firefighters quickly rescued the residents and provided medical evaluation/treatment outside. Two people (including one child) were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation in unknown condition.
“Crews deployed hose lines to the fire unit and quickly extinguished the flames. Fire ground personnel set up blowers to systematically evacuate smoke from the building and restore fresh air inside.”
The condition of the building was unclear, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
