An autopsy was pending Wednesday on the body of a 72-year-old pedestrian struck and killed by an SUV while standing in a traffic lane on the west end of Riverside.

The victim, identified only as a Riverside man, was fatally injured just after 5 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Altadena Drive and Biscayne Avenue, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Sgt. Dan Macias said the man was in the westbound lane of Altadena Drive when a Chevrolet Equinox traveling at an unconfirmed speed hit him.

The driver, who was not injured, immediately stopped.

The pedestrian was gravely injured and taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he died that night.

The SUV driver was questioned but not arrested.

“At this time, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved,” Macias said.

The police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is handling the matter.

Anyone with information was asked to call the unit at 951-353-7177.
