Police asked the public for help Saturday finding the driver of a gray or silver car that struck and killed a pedestrian in Canoga Park.

The crash was reported at about 5:15 p.m. Friday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The victim, described as a Black man in his early 40s and a Canoga Park resident, was crossing westbound De Soto Avenue just north of Gresham Street when he was struck by a gray or silver vehicle that was going southbound on De Soto, police said. The driver failed to stop.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, and his name withheld pending notification of relatives.

“(Valley Traffic Division) detectives are urging the public to come forward with information regarding this fatal hit and run. There was a lot of traffic in the area of De Soto Avenue and Gresham Street at the time of the collision,” the LAPD said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash was asked to call Investigator Olson at 818-644-8022 or Detective Martinez at 818-644-8033. Calls after business hours can go through 1-877-527-3247 and anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

Motorists involved in a collision should always pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, call emergency services and remain at the scene to cooperate with investigators, police said.
