Authorities are expected to announce charges Friday against a suspect in the shooting of two security guards outside the Target store at the FIGat7th shopping mall in downtown Los Angeles.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman and Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference Friday in front of the store at 735 S. Figueroa St.
The suspect was arrested Tuesday following an hours-long standoff with the Los Angeles Police Department at an apartment building in the downtown area.
He was identified as 25-year-old Jabril Metoyer, CBS2 reported. Metoyer was being held on $3 million bail.
Officers responded to the outdoor mall near Seventh Street at around 8:55 p.m. Monday to reports of several shots fired, according to the LAPD.
Store surveillance video showed a man attempting to walk out with a suitcase containing unpaid items — but when confronted by the security guards, he produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the victims, police said.
One of the victims was an armed security officer employed by the mall and the other was a Target employee, LAPD Capt. Raul Jovel said.
Police also confirmed that one of the guards fired at the suspect, but it was not clear if the suspect was struck. At least 10 rounds were exchanged, and some walls of the shopping plaza were also struck, Jovel added.
The suspect reportedly rode away from the area on a bicycle.
The two victims were taken to a hospital, with one in critical condition, according to the LAPD. The other victim was treated and released.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the shooting was asked to contact Detective Alvarez at 213-833-3750.
