A 30-year-old man is under arrest for allegedly murdering his 64-year-old roommate in Long Beach, authorities said Wednesday.
Just before 9 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to reports of a possible suicide in the 3000 block of Gold Star Drive in the city’s Upper Westside region, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Officers arrived and found the victim, identified as Tyrone Crawford, dead with a gunshot wound to the upper body.
Police said the suspect, identified as Trayen Gaston, also was on the scene when officers arrived and was taken into custody as part of the investigation. Upon further investigation, homicide detectives determined that the two men shared a residence and recovered evidence connecting Gaston to the murder and arrested him, the LBPD said.
He was taken to Long Beach City Jail and booked on suspicion of murder, prohibited possessor in possession of a firearm, and prohibited possessor in possession of ammunition. His bail was set at $2 million.
The motive for the shooting was under investigation.
Detectives were expected to present his case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office this week.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting was asked to contact Homicide Detectives Eric Thai and Chasen Contreras at 562-570-7244. Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can call 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
