Beverly Hills police advised the public Thursday to be aware of the state’s new crosswalk daylighting law, which is aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety by improving visibility at intersections.

Assembly Bill 413, which took full effect Jan. 1, prohibits parking within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk and within 15 feet of crosswalks with curb extensions.

According to police, the law was enacted to address the disproportionately high rate of pedestrian deaths in Southern California. Citing California Office of Traffic Safety data, Beverly Hills police said the state’s pedestrian death rate is approximately 25% higher than the national average.

“Throughout 2024, only warnings were issued for violations to allow time for public education and awareness,” police said in a statement. “However, as of Jan. 1, 2025, citations are now being issued for non-compliance.”
