One person was killed and at least three more were injured on Interstate 10 Friday after a collision involving a westbound sedan in eastbound lanes.

The driver traveling in the wrong direction was reported shortly after 2:30 a.m. Friday, according to CHP records, while the crash itself occurred 10 minutes later near the Whitewater Rest Area.

A coroner was requested the scene.

Of the three reported injured, two patients whose injuries were designated as “major” were transported to Desert Regional Medical Hospital. Updates on their conditions were not immediately available.

The eastbound lanes were reopened by 6 a.m., according to CHP records. None of the drivers involved were identified.
