One person was killed and at least two others are in critical condition following a multi-vehicle collision involving a wrong-way driver that backed up traffic Tuesday for miles on the San Diego (405) Freeway in Sherman Oaks.

California Highway Patrol officers responded at 4:06 a.m. Tuesday to the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway near the Valley Vista Boulevard exit where they collision began, CHP Officer Sergio Garcia told City News Service.

Garcia said reports from the scene indicated a motorist driving the wrong way was involved in the crash, but he did know to what extent.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene and two others victims was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Fox 11 reported. Another person declined medical treatment and was released on scene, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Mark McLean said.

The fatal collision closed down all lanes of the southbound freeway and triggered a massive backup to west Encino to the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway, ABC 7 reported.
