The Long Beach Police Department will conduct DUI checkpoints in the North Division of the city on Friday, the department announced Wednesday.

During the checkpoint, from 6 p.m. through 2 a.m., officers will be looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, including marijuana, some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs that could impair driving.

A first-time DUI charge could cost drivers about $13,500 in fines and penalties, and impaired drivers could also have their license suspended.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” LBPD Commander Jeremy Boshnack said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
